What are the rules governing gate and runner sizes for plastic injection mould tools. Or perhaps a rule of thumb to start with.

There are many books written on the subject ... Have a look at our Bookshop at ... http://shop.bpf.co.uk/ or contact the raw material suppliers who will allways help PRAS Consultant

The obvious rules are that: The gate should not affect the aesthetic of the product yet it is big enough to fill the cavity before freezing
The runners should be balanced so that you ensure simultaneous filling of the cavities. They may be equidistant fron the sprue or they may be of restricted flow or widened flow depending on the gate size and distance of the cavity from the sprue.
Of course other machine parameters play a role like pressure, speed and melt temperature.

Gates ,a consideration is also based on whether the mould is a hot runner or cold runner mould.

I hope it makes sense.
