Plastic Selection for Product

Name:
Matthew McLean

Hello there,

I am a student currently doing a project on a Football Feeder for Goalkeepers. I am designing the outer casing and wondering if you could recommened a plastic for the outer casing.

It needs to be light but also able to withstand a high impace force because the ball is ejecting at 70mph.

This question is purely for academic use and not for industrial use.

Thanks in advance
Matt

Hi Matt.

PC is generally used on applications that require high impact strength.

I think the best course of action is for you to estimate the impact energy of a ball at that speed ( with a simple kinetic energy formula, for example) and then compare the impact energy for several plastics. You can do that in database, such as CAMPUS or matweb.com .

Good luck.

Since you need high impact strength, you can go for
1) HIPS with Glass filled.

Because of outer casing you can go for

2) FRP SMC Compression Molding. which will give good strength.
