Hardwearing plastics

Hi, As part of a college project I have come up with a new design for a retractable dog lead. I was wondering what the best hardwearing plastic for the outer casing would be. I think it would have to be able to be injection moulded. Would ABS be suitable or is there other more suitable materials available.
Would the same plastic be suitable for small cogs within the lead casing. The teeth may have to take a bit of abuse.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for a safe/environmentally friendly resin

Hi, I work with school children developing art projects and have come up with an idea for using plastic bottle tops and metal lids for mosaic work. I would like to develop this method for outdoor use and thought about polyester resin to pour over the finished mosaic design to set firmly in the ground and become weather resistant. However, i am concerned about this material being far from environmentally friendly and not in-keeping with the re-cycling ethos of the project. Could anyone suggest an alternative material or provide me with more info of how these resins are made?
Thanks for your time

bio plastic VS PVC

Hi all,
we handmake bags in Italy, women bags with different kind of plastic materials, mostly with polyvinyl chloride;

have a look on our website for further information and better explanation of what we do (WWW.PASSEPARTOUT-BAGS.IT).

I'm graduating in biology, and anyway I always have been aware by the problem of recycling these materials.
What can we do to
1) buy the raw materials we use in factories which are using CEE Protocols or are trying to be eco-friendly in the production procedure.
2) inform our customers about the recycling problem, give them tips on how they can recycle their products when it will be unusable/waste.

Thanks for your attention,

Sandrine

Ski Saftey product

Hi,
I am currently developing a ski saftey product for which we have field tested a basic design & proven it's capabilities.
I am after some help to this product from a raw design & prototype into one that is professionally finished & can be mass produced.
In particular we need to finalise the actual plastics used so not only is it functional, but also meets the style requirements of the ski market.
Any ideas?

Suitable plastic required for injection moulded children's tableware

We are new company designing children's tableware. We need to find suitable plastics which will meet with food hygiene standards, be fairly rigid with a degree of flexibility, have good colour fastness, contain no harmful chemicals, would be suitable for dishwashers (and possibly but not absolutely necessary microwaves). Are there any good sources of recycled plastics which would meet all the above points and/or which plastic would be recyclable (which meets all of the above points?) We are only using one colour in order that the plates can be easily recycled.

Cold cure Vs Vacuum forming to replicate puppet eyeballs!

Hello, I need to replicate a pair of existing puppet-eyes because the found object they were made out of no-longer exists. The replicated eyeballs need to be light-weight, strong enough/thick enough to take a few knocks and retain their shape. I'm confident I can cast them, or at least make a mould of them, but should I use some kind of cold-cure or re-create them using vacuum forming. If it's the former (in case I can't find access to the machinery) what kind of plastic should I be using.
Thanks for any advice you can give!

Plastics for Use in Pre-school Toys

Hi

I am currently in the middle of a final year project for my engineering degree. Our project is to develop a childs Toy (3-5 yrs old), a business plan, manufacturing and material costs. We have a current design which would have a plasic outer shell, containing electonic circuitry, an LCD Screen, battery and a memory card.

When trying to find out about plasic moudling techniques and plasic costs I found there would a staggering amount of plasics on the market.

My question is what type of plasic would be appropriate for this project, and what sort of cost per lb this sort of plastic would be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
